When a new CEO gets into an office, many are the expectations from both the internal and external public's of such an organization. In the center of the expectations is the new man at the helm of affairs. The nature of his duty and the new position most times adds up to confuse the new CEO.
Albeit, here are seven things they must know and give attention to:-
You cannot run the company alone. Great organizations are known for their team work as against a boss and servant relationship. You are not promoted to issue orders from above. You must understand that everyone is absolutely important to the progress of the business. Everyone must be treated as a VIP while not forgetting that the right commands must be issued timely.
Emphasis must be placed on learning as against training. The general class in management is interested in the numbers and nomenclature of trainings attended. However, you have to understand that any given management is set up to produce positive results. All efforts are to be shifted to positive application of anything learnt.
Growing the company is your most important duty. Many new CEOs are after pleasing the owners of the company to the detriment of the real growth of the business. Dancing to the tune of the shareholders demands are straight route to killing the business. The mother hen that lays the golden egg must be catered for first.
You are likely to receive wrong information most times. Those at the top are not always given the right information especially when such information passes through different hands. Such information is either watered down or pepped up. As the information passes through many hands some may strike out what they don't like while some due to sycophancy will only peddle bad information. Thus you must develop an information gathering network that will offer you first hand information on a constant level.
You are likely to be misrepresented or misunderstood. You are always sending out signals in form of spoken, unspoken, official or unofficial. Meanings are arrived at and appendaged to what you say or do irrespective of how you mean. Though this is never intentional yet it erupts to duplicate issues unknowingly.
You can still make mistakes. You must not forget that you are still human. Your imperfections still exist irrespective of your top position. These imperfections will play out itself at different occasions, you must own them up as quickly as possible and thinker corrective measures to deal with them. It is important that you don't trade blames at such periods rather you take charge and keep the momentum on.
You alone can dictate how things will look like in your organization. As a CEO, you set the environment in the tune it will go. If you show a friendly personality or vice versa, your workforce will take on it. As the head, you lead others follow. Any pattern you approve of officially or unofficially is what your employees will play out for you.
